First edition. A presentation copy, inscribed by Cheever to his friends John and Harriet Weaver on first free endpaper: To John and Harriet with love / John.

Cheever and John Weaver met in the early 1940s in Astoria, Queens, where both were stationed during the war to work on government training films for the Army Signal Corps at the old Paramount studio. They remained close and exchanged nearly three hundred letters throughout the ensuing four decades. In them, Cheever discussed his life and work, his financial and editorial woes, his battles with alcohol, and his marital difficulties, to name some of the most intimate subjects. Weaver published his Cheever letters, including many of his own initiatives and replies, in 1993 as Glad Tidings (New York: Harper Collins). This inscription is further evidence of a long-lived relationship of great importance to Cheever.
